Overview

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Preserves

  • Ensure your homemade preserves or jam are ready and still hot.

Step 2: Fill the Jars

  • Carefully ladle the hot preserves or jam into the sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch (0.5 cm) of headspace at the top.
  • Wipe the rim of the jars with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove any spills or residue.

Step 3: Apply the Wax Discs

  • Place a wax disc directly on top of the hot preserves or jam, ensuring it covers the entire surface.
  • Gently press down the edges of the wax disc to ensure a good seal.

Step 4: Seal the Jars

  • Place the lid on the jar and secure it tightly.
  • Allow the jars to cool at room temperature. As they cool, the wax disc will help prevent mold formation by sealing the surface.

Storage

Store the sealed jars in a cool, dark place. Properly sealed and stored preserves can last for several months.

Additional Tips

  • Always use clean, sterilized equipment when making preserves to prevent contamination.
  • If any mold does form, discard the preserve to avoid the risk of foodborne illness.
